Four years ago I kept Callum Dunmore to nine touches in a Globe Cup quarter-final and we lost anyway. This summer I get one more go at him. We live in the same house.
Six weeks in a country of under two million people. England are camped at Sigulda, in a hotel on the lip of a river gorge, fifty miles and one entire half of the bracket away. Which means there is exactly one fixture in this tournament where I get to play him, and it is the last one. Daugava Arena. Sunday the twenty-sixth. Forty-one thousand seats. Three point nine percent, by my own math, that both of us get there. Where I come from that is plus twenty-four hundred.
We wrote the rule at our own kitchen table in May, and I am the one who said it out loud. Neither of us arrives at that final having been helped by the man he has to beat. No contact unless somebody is hurt or somebody dies.
I wrote half of it. I would sign it again this evening.
The arrangement is still open. That part we kept. Masks on, phones in a pouch, no names at the door, same as it has been for three years.
It has stopped working for both of us.
Neither of us can say so, because saying so is contact.
Then there is Rasa Saulīte. Six foot three, center back for the host nation, my best friend for four years, and in all that time she has never once wanted anything from me.
On the twelfth of June she asks for something.
Callum Dunmore has spent three years being the one person I never have to explain anything to.
This summer I am not allowed to say a word to him.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Explicit M/M. A big-small size difference, size talk as a love language, masks and an open door, two men whose bodies only work when somebody knows them, and on-page heat with a woman inside an open arrangement. Full content note inside.
